Heiwa-Ryu Newsletter - 08/25/99
To all:
This is just a brief electronic message to pass along some information regarding
Heiwa-Ryu Martial Arts Academy: the students, the yudansha, our program, and
upcoming events. Eventually I would like to have something on-line and
something handed out. I will try to catch everyone up to date on things over
the last 4 to 5 months in hope that we can encourage each other with our daily
lives and continue to build upon the foundation already established.
The Students
We have three new students that have joined Heiwa-Ryu in the last several
months: Ken Dobberpuhl, Judy Dobberpuhl, and Tony Sandoval. Please welcome
Ken-san, Judy-san, and Tony-san to the Heiwa-Ryu Family!! Ed Nowicki had been
mobilized with his Air Force reserve unit earlier this year and was sent to the
East Coast. Ed is now back in California and getting caught up on his work
before he will be able to get back to class. Welcome back Ed-san!! Jay Friberg
was hired by the Alameda County Sheriff's Department and has been attending the
Police Academy. For those of you not familiar with Jay-san, he had attended the
academy years ago and is a certified Paramedic. The Sheriff's Department
required him to return to the academy. Let's keep Jay-san in prayer since the
academy is no walk in the park. Keep it up Jay-san and hurry back!! Michael
Schwab was hired by AirTouch Support Services working on some key projects for
the wireless service provider in the area of contract negotiations and
compliance. Congratulations Schwab-san!! I received
an e-mail from Nick Alexander stating that he and his mother, Beverly, have had
to relocate to the North Bay and will not be able to attend Heiwa-Ryu for the
foreseeable future. Keep them in your thoughts since I know we will all miss
them. Doug Anderson will be finishing up his MBA program at CSU Hayward this
coming December. Doug-san plans on returning to class upon graduation. We
cannot wait to have you back!! Chris Crabtree, and his wife Lisa, will also be
finishing up their MBA program as well and he is equally eager to get back to
class. David Bland left for Military Boarding School last week. David-san sends his
regards to the Heiwa-Ryu Family!!
The Yudansha
Just some brief notes here!! Michael Bland-sensei was in the Bay Area a couple
of months ago, but has since returned to Japan. He will be traveling to Korea
for a visit. We miss you Bland-sensei!! Gabe Rafael-sensei was the "man in
charge" for the recent Regional Championship for the World Escrima Kali Arnis
Federation (WEKAF) held in San Ramon. Rafael-sensei is the current defending
World Champion of the WEKAF. Keep doing great things Rafael-sensei!! Michael
Roy-sensei went to Europe with his wife Jill for 3 weeks and drove around in
their European delivered BMW. We are very happy that you were able to spend
some great quality time with your wife Roy-sensei!!
Our Program
In the last year our program has evolved some. It will continue, to some
degree, to evolve even more both immediately and in the years to come. As I
continue on my martial travels I will add or modify things to our program that I
find are of significant value or have great benefit to our overall understanding
of the martial arts. In the last several months I have begun teaching a Tai Chi
Ch'uan class at AirTouch Communications in the Shadelands area of Walnut Creek.
This class has several participants and I have included them on the distribution
list of this electronic newsletter. We have completed the first two "chapters"
of the solo exercise and will probably begin the final one by the middle of next
month. In a later e-mail I will discuss all of the Heiwa-Ryu programs both
offered and those to come more clearly. At this time, Heiwa-Ryu offers
instruction in our "standard" program (Karate, Tai Chi Ch'uan, and their
synthesis in Combative Skills) and in our "Tai Chi Only" program (Tai Chi Ch'uan
Solo exercise). We will be working to offer later this year our "Junior"
program (general martial arts for ages 5-9) and a "Self-Defense Seminar" program
targeted at gym and other training facilities as a way of creating awareness in
the area of self-defense and to shamelessly plug Heiwa-Ryu at the same time. I
am working to develop "Law Enforcement Officer Close Combat Seminar" program for
release sometime next year. This will be designed to enhance the law
enforcement officer's close combat awareness, familiarize the law enforcement
community with the devastating power of properly applied martial arts
techniques, and to shamelessly plug Heiwa-Ryu at the same time.
Upcoming Events
There is one upcoming event that I would really like to encourage the Heiwa-Ryu
Family to strongly consider going. On Saturday September 18th in Sacramento,
there will be a "Big Three Seminar" being held from 9:00am until 5:00pm. The
"Big Three" are George Dillman (Tuite and Pressure Point Theory), Wally Jay
(Small Circle Jujitsu), and Remy Presas (Modern Arnis) and will be presenting.
Lunch is a part of the seminar and the cost for participation is $99 in advance
and $30 for spectators. I think that this seminar would be a great opportunity
for everyone at all levels, so be encouraged to come. Please let me know if you
are interested so that I can let the coordinator know how many from Heiwa-Ryu
will be coming. I will be trying to set-up a van for the group to travel up and
back in order to minimize the convoy fiasco. Hope you can come!!
Take care one and all!!
