1.1 General Notes - There are some "do's" and "don'ts" and "dues" when it comes to the foods that we eat during our lifetime - here are some observations, thoughts, and suggestions:

A. "Do's" and "don'ts"

"Don'ts" first - especially if you have any allergies or learning disabilities or ADD!!
Avoid / Do not eat or drink:
As the 1960's and 70's hit the American school scene, children were taught that "You are what you eat" and that there were four basic food groups - proteins, carbohydrates, vegetables and fruits, and dairy products. The first statement is painfully and biochemically true; the last statement is false. Milk is not and has never been a "food group". More allergies and stomach disorders have been linked to dairy products than any other group of ingested items, not to mention the pesticides and herbicides that have been taken up by milk cows and transmitted to an unsuspecting consumer with seriously debilitating results. Bottom line - avoid all bovine dairy products such as milk and cheese.

B. Now the "Do's" - Diet/Health/Nutrition - This is by far the best way to be healthy and to get well.

1. Your diet is extremely important; an excess or lack of certain chemicalsand or hormones will affect your personality and/or your energy and stamina on a day to day basis. We can't tell you what to eat but that you should eat according to your need, not your cravings. Seek competent advice from a competent doctor and nutritionist about your diet. One way to find a competent doctor who understands the role of nutrition in health and healing is to ask him or her how many hours of nutrition did they take/study in medical school. Ask them about the last books they read on nutrition. Ask them to name the basic food groups - if they say four and that dairy products is a food group, find another doctor.

2. The test of a good diet is:

HEALTH AND NUTRITION - by Doub, Sr-Soke on 1/1/96

People in the United States tend to be overfed and overweight. The reason for this is that most of us overeat, that is, we take in more calories than our energy needs or requirements. Why? Our eating habits were formed shortly after infancy. As we get older it becomes difficult to change bad eating habits.

To be effective in karate and in life, we need a good diet, it is absolutely essential. In order to understand what a good diet is, we need to re-educate ourselves and throw off the perceptions and concepts that were slipped into our minds by special interest groups and well meaning but ignorant doctors.

To be effective, we need to eat the proper foods and exercise every day -- if we miss exercise and/or practice for a few days we must start over there is no catching up. When machines aren't properly cared for they don't work properly and eventually break down -- our bodies are the most sophisticated machines ever made.

The food we eat provides us with energy from three sources: carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. In order to utilize the energy from these nutrients, our body must break down the bulk form into simple forms. The diagram below shows the basic steps in this breakdown process which is called, ingestion and digestion.

Ingestion - we take a mouthful of food, chew it enough so that it is physically broken up into a chunky paste and mixed with certain enzymes that were excreted from under the tongue and other places. We then swallow.
Digestion:
                  Carbohydrates       Acid/Enzyme breakdown       =========>       Glucose
Proteins       Acid/Enzyme breakdown       =========>       amino acids
Fats       Acid/Enzyme breakdown       =========>       fatty acids

Carbohydrates are complex sugars (starches) and are found in most foods, i.e., bread, cereals, and fruits and vegetables. Carbohydrates must be broken down into simple sugars in order to be absorbed into the blood stream. They are then carried to the muscle and brain for energy and to the liver and adipose (fatty) tissue for storage for future use. Carbohydrates are essential but most of us take in far too much carbohydrate; what isn't used for energy or stored in the liver is converted to and stored as FAT. So counting carbohydrates is just as important as counting calories.

Proteins are amino acids linked together which are necessary to rebuild and repair body tissue. Proteins can be found in legumes (beans, lentils, nuts, etc.), rice, whole grain cereals, fish, eggs, and poultry. The body is able to make 12 of the twenty amino acids but the other 8 must be taken in from the food we eat and are called essential amino acids. Failure to eat foods, which contain these essential amino acids, can result in problems in all the body organs. To combat protein deficiency the body starts by breaking down the hair, then the skin and finally the muscles and uses the protein in them.

Fats are composed of glycerol and fatty acids, the latter being stored as fat in the adipose tissue (That's our "chubbies" and love handles) until needed for energy. This provides padding and warmth for the internal organs and insulation from external changes in temperature - most of us have more insulation than we need. There is evidence to show that people who eat diets high in saturated fats are more susceptible to heart disease.

Note: To maintain the normal function of bodily organs a minimum of 3-5 cups of fluid daily is required. Water is the best; unsweetened fruit juices are acceptable.

Try for a "Wheatgrass" once a week - for some, it may be an "acquired taste".

Take a look in Dr. Linda Rector Page's Healthy Healing Cookbook - it's great!

Notes on HEALTH AND NUTRITION-by Michael A. Roy, O.D., Modified by Doub, Sr.-Soke

Good health depends on attitude, exercise and nutrition. Thinking right, training right and eating right are the most important earthly objectives. Although they fall far behind your spiritual path, these objectives can make our time on earth a very pleasant one.

The food we eat is divided water, protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins and minerals.

WATER comprises 75% of our body weight and is the diluting agent for all metabolic processes. We need to drink one quart per hundred pounds of body weight per day, better more than less. The body produces thirst when it begins to dry out, but we must force water to achieve optimal levels. All body functions perform best with the proper amount of water.

PROTEIN is the building block of tissue. It is composed of 20 amino acids, the essential 8 of which we cannot produce ourselves and must get from food. Protein is essential for growth and repair. Excess protein is temporarily stored in liver and muscles. Long term excess is changed into new muscle, nerve, connective and skin tissue. When we lack protein we break down hair, skin and finally muscle to provide it. The amino acid breakdown leads to waste products, glucose, or fat. Protein is found in legumes, nuts, whole grains, fish, and poultry. Digestion time is five to six hours.

CARBOHYDRATE is a complex sugar which breaks down to simple sugars (mainly glucose) for immediate use in cell metabolism. Temporary excess sugar is converted to glycogen and stored in the liver for later use. True excess is converted to fat and stored in adipose tissue. Carbohydrtae is found in grains, fruits and vegetables. Energy release is 4.1 calories per gram. Digestion time is five to twenty minutes.

FAT (triglycerides) is a chemical compound composed of glycerol and fatty acid. Fat insulates and protects internal organs against injury and temperature change. Breakdown leads to glycogen or glucose at the rate of 9.3 calories per gram. The body's inability to process animal fats has lead to some reports of prostate cancer for men and arthritis and skin disorders for many.

VITAMINS AND MINERALS are substances which were recognized as essential for life and health before their chemical composition was known. They are components of enzyme molecules and are part of the chemical mechanisms for controlling body activities. Without adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals, growth and development, reproduction, resistance to infection and health in general are impossible.

The following is a suggested daily vitamin and mineral formula for nutritional insurance. These doses are for adults and teenagers. Young children can use 1/2 the adult dose except for vitamin C which is weight related.

Weight Control and Energy - Eating for energy in martial arts and weight control involves recognizing that the Lord has given you a certain body type and foods to nourish it.

  1. If you think that you are chubby, work hard at your Kata every day - Lau Tzu and Sanchin - you will strengthen your body. Go on a three (3) day apple fast / diet with 6 - 8 (8 oz.) glasses of water per day with potassium in each one. Then after three days, eat mostly fruits in the morning and vegetables for your noon and evening meals until you feel right and can't pinch an inch. Check also your basal body temperature, most Americans suffer from slightly to low thyroid problems.

  2. If you are just right, still work hard at your Kata every day - Lau Tzu and Sanchin - you will continue to strengthen the body. Eat mostly fruits and cereals in the morning and vegetables and pasta for your noon meal. For the evening meal, eat your vegetables, grains, nuts, and other good stuff - always check the "pinch an inch" places.

  3. If you think that you need some extra weight, still work hard at your Kata every day - Lau Tzu and Sanchin - you will continue to strengthen the body. Eat mostly fruits and cereals in the morning and vegetables and pasta for your noon meal. For the evening meal, eat your vegetables, grains, nuts, and other good stuff - always check the "pinch an inch" places - in other words, your body is fine, let your body seek its right weight.

One cardinal rule is: avoid as much as possible those foods which have been refined or processed and that contain food additives and chemical pollutants. Many food additives have been linked to environmental health defects, but the four worst are:

1. Polysorbate 60 2. EDTA 3. Sugar 4. Artificial coloring

The prettier the package the more suspect the food. A biochemist at the University of Georgia chose one of the new child-attractive cereals and emulsified both the box and the cereal. He then fed the cereal to one white rat and the box to another. The rat that ate the box thrived better. The Optimal Diet is not really a diet but a guide. There are no menus to prepare nor carbohydrates or calories to count. You need not measure or weigh portions. Let appetite and goals design the portions as above. Both the underweight and the overweight can use the Optimal Diet. For this program there are merely three classes of foods:

  1. FOODS TO EAT LIBERALLY Seafood, poultry, fruit, fruit juices, vegetables, breads, cereals, nuts and seeds. Proper vitamin intake (especially vitamin C) will lower the cholesterol level that many people fear. For a good explanation of how 80% of the cholesterol we carry is produced in our bodies (not ingested), see PSYCHODIETETICS by Emanuel Cheraskin, M.D. and THE HEALING FACTOR, VITAMIN C AGAINST DISEASE by Irwin Stone, Ph.D.

  2. Foods to eat Sparingly: pork, shellfish, poultry, coffee and tea. The interpretation here depends on overweight, underweight, physical activity, cholesterol level and hypoglycemia. Heiwa Ryu students in good shape can be more liberal than others.

  3. Foods to Avoid: all red meat, fats and oils, salt, sugar, white flour, hydrogenated fats, food preservatives (such as Nitrates and Nitrites), BHA, BHT, artificial flavorings and colorings.

This is just a beginning of your nutritional quest. Read more. Cheraskin and Stone are a good place to start. Also read Dr. Dean Ornish's book and Dr. McDougal's book - then eat well and enjoy life.

Review of the "Do's":

1. Your diet is extremely important because an excess or lack of certain chemicals and or hormones will affect your personality on a day by day basis. We can't tell youw hat to eat but that you should eat acording to your needs, not your cravings. Seek competent advice from a competent doctor and nutritionist about your diet.

2. Notes:
2.1      Drink 'lots' of water that is free from chlorine and fluorides - that means distilled bottled water or appropriately filtered water.
2.2      Eat a balanced diet from the three basic food groups:
a. Protein -- beans, fish, or poultry
b. Vegetables and Fruits -- dark green vegetables are best
c. Carbohydrates/Starch

C. Levels of understanding, application, and use
The following "pictograph" shows a relationship between what we know and what we do about what we know.

Definitions/Descriptions:
The Pictograph is attempting to graphically represent the relationships between the levels of knowledge that run from self help / first aid to the level of those healing professionals who represent the leading edge of medical research and applied therapies.

Basic Information: The level at which most individuals operate; "I have a headache, let me take some aspirin."

Minimal Understanding: The level where certain individuals are able to relate "Symptom - Effect - Cause". An example might be a mother giving her child an enema.

Further Understanding: At this level, the patient is also an educator, first to himself and then to those around him or her. A good example is diet and nutrition. One might have consumed fat or sugar products over the years only to discover that heart disease is definitely tied to fat intake and the storage of sugars as fats and other elements. Armed with that knowledge, our traveler minimizes all fat and sugar intake and starts to reduce the intake by members of their immediate family.

Clinical Research and Healing Applications: This applies to those medical professionals, both Western and Oriental, that understand cell metabolism and bioelectrical relationships. Armed with this knowledge, they practice the art of healing and dealing with chronic disease in others.

1.2 Heiwa-Ryu's Approach - Amplified -- Quality of Life and "Longevity"

Much like the readers of software manuals written for today's personal computers, some of you will want to "get up and running as soon as possible"; theory to follow later.

In order to get up and running quickly as to the healing process, we need to make a statement. We want to layout a plausible model and then provide some background, direction, scope, focus, and process.

Statement - Our bodies are simply complex. They are simple in one respect when it comes to the theory that our bodies dynamically record and keep score of our thoughts, emotions, and the foods we eat. A kind of "tit" for "tat" relationship - drink too much alcohol and we either get drunk or sick or a combination of both.

Reflection - "The Healing and Being Well Process" - Recent studies by John Doub, Sr-Soke and some of his associates have pointed out a number of significant items that truly affect our bodies, our health, our quality of life, and ultimately our longevity. They are:

A.     Hormone Balance - Both men and women have a need for their hormones to be in balance. Hormone testing is available. We urge all our students to take the "saliva test" to establish a baseline and start on a "Progesterone Program" of their own. There are many benefits - rversal of osteoporosis and the increase in bone density is just one of the benefits.
B.     Thyroid Balance - Almost all people in industrialized nations will suffer from hypo-thyroidism - low energy, weight that just doesn't seem to come off, etc. Again, take charge of and responsibility for your own health. Take your basal body temperature and see where you are.
C.     The Healing Process - Recovery from "chronic disease" or lingering sickness. Our bodies are complex in how all of the parts relate to each other and to our mental state; all of us have seen our bodies affect our moods and our moods affect out bodies; anyone who has played sports or been in the arts can confirm this.

What seems to get lost in American culture today is the relationship of the following items:

We are who the Lord created (Triune).
We are who we think we are (Spirit).
We are what we do (Mind).
We are what we eat (Body).

Note that throughout this inter-relationship, our bodies seem to dynamically record and keep score on both a short-term basis and a long-term basis.

Take the example previously used about alcohol. Short term, we got sick / drunk and our motor skills were impaired for a short period of time; sometimes if we drank water soon after this event, we got high again - residual effects. Interestingly, long time alcohol abusers tend to have the smell of alcohol "oozing" out of their bodies, their skin smells. Long time abuse also results in the gradual destruction of the liver and its abilities - cirrhosis. We at Heiwa-Ryu believe in an active kidney / liver / lymph / lung / skin relationship (HRR).

Model / Mechanism - Based upon the clinical work of a chiropractor, a nutritionist, and three MD doctors, we at Heiwa-Ryu believe that chronic sickness - disease is a temporary condition of the body brought on by the liver and lymph system being overloaded or "backed up" and unable to properly process and dispose of food "by-products" and/or toxins.

The person suffering from chronic disease is being overloaded with certain food "by-products" due to a combination of an inability to process certain foods completely and/or a thin section of the digestive tract which is allowing food "by-products" / radicals / toxins to enter the blood stream and interstitial spaces within the body which poisons it. This poisoned condition is further aggravated by a shortage of potassium (K) which is one of the most crucial elements needed for cell metabolism.

The body attempts to "detoxify" itself by filtering the blood stream through the liver. If the liver can't remove all of the toxins (the rate of loading exceeds the rate of detoxification) the body will become poisoned, the immune system will be overloaded due to body stress and then "presto" the body is now susceptible to other diseases.

The lymph system normally sweeps the other cell wastes that are not transported by the blood (circulatory system) from either the cell wall or the interstitial spaces where the lymph "finds" those wastes. The lymph system will separate the liquid from particulates on a molecular level; the liquid is dumped into the blood stream, the particulates are "mucused" and appear to be dumped into the colon for elimination.

As the liver overloads, it defaults to the lymph system for backup support. However, the lymph system is already at work cleaning / clearing the cells and interstitial spaces. The lymph system itself becomes overloaded as it attempts to sweep the increased level of toxins out of the interstitial spaces and from cell venting - cell wall transport. As the level of "sustained toxins" increases over time and the purifying / sweeping become more overloaded, some bodies attempt to use the skin to vent and throw off the toxins - this can trigger / cause accelerated skin cell growth or conditions that are labeled as Psoriasis and Eczema. Other studies indicate that Arthritis and Arteriosclerosis can also be caused by this condition.

Since the body is constantly processing food and constantly cleaning / clearing itself, the symptoms of P/E, Arthritis, etc. will not occur overnight. P/E appears to be the body's way of coping with a constant toxic overload condition; it copes by creating more skin cells rapidly in order to trap / vent / encapsulate / shed the toxin overload rapidly.

If this is representative of what is going on in the bodies of those who suffer from chronic disease, then logic would dictate that if the toxin handling systems are "cleaned / cleared" then the symptoms should diminish and go away; clinical and practical experience demonstrates that this is indeed what takes place. As the systems are "cleaned / cleared", the symptoms do go away and stay away as long as the clearing process is adhered to.

Simply put, when we have a chronic disorder, we should use those principles that were discovered centuries ago - Hippocrates (460-377 BC) - and utilized by medical doctors in modern times since the 1930's:

Modern / Heiwa-Ryu Approach Hippocrates (Contemporary of Socrates)
* Attitudinal healing and support * The effect of climate on the mind and body
* Chiropractic work and adjustments * "Look well to the spine"
* Deep lymphatic massage techniques
* Diet guidelines and recommendations * Diet
drinking "cleaning / clearing" teas * Medicinal waters
* Taking "cleaning / clearing" baths
or Twice a day into the hot tub

* Daily exercise * Fresh air and gymnastics

We believe that following this six point program will provide a cost effective therapy for the healing of most chronic disorders. OK "bottom liners" let's get started on the following program!

The Treatment Program - the Six (6) Point Way
1.    ATTITUDINAL HEALING

2.    CHIROPRACTIC
      ADJUSTMENTS

3.    MASSAGE

4.    DIET EDUCATION
      FOODS CONSUMED &
      HERBAL TEAS
      Moves body to alkaline
      state - aids in
      evacuation/elimination

5.    BATHS, EXTERNAL
      APPLICATIONS

6.    EXERCISE - 30 MINUTES
This process shifts the focus from the "dis-ease" and the symptoms over to the cause and the healing process from within.

Adjustments specifically improve circulation and nerve flow; generally improves structural balance and general well being. Supports colon and lymph functions.

Promotes lymphatic circulation and the release of toxins.

Giving the body what it needs in order to shift into a healing mode and promote the control of symptoms. High Potassium intake, high alkaline diet, low acid fiber, fresh fruit, and vegetables - no caffeine - limited alcohol. Cleans / clears the colon.

Help to heal external lesions and relieve the itching.

The development and/or participation in a regular exercise program assists all body functions to receive increased blood supplies which augments the detoxification process. Utilize the Tai Chi Chuan as both an exercise and as an attitudinal shift device.

1.3 Appendix: Background / Scope - At Heiwa-Ryu, sickness is viewed as an impediment to happiness; sickness must be healed through education and then action. If we understand the nature of our struggle and the healing mechanism, then we can start the recovery.

At Heiwa-Ryu, we view healing as being based upon a time-demonstrated regimen that has effectively relieved the cause and the symptoms of all diseases in numerous patients. Herein is an outline of the history and the theory behind this statement:

1. "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it." - Unknown
This time worn cliche is unfortunately true now as when it was first uttered; so what does it have to do with those suffering from chronic illness? Maybe there is some merit and value in looking at some of the historical views of sickness and its treatment of the spirit, mind, and body.
2. The (Chinese) Yellow Emperor, Hippocrates, Plato and the moderns of Gerson, Schwitzer, and Cayce viewed and treated sickness on a "Wholistic" basis. They treated the spirit, mind, and body as a unit. As a result, they were able to heal people in a more complete manner than those proponents of "...here is an aspirin for your headache..." who never asked why you have the headache - cause and effect.
3. Focus - The Heiwa-Ryu program is aimed at treating spirit, mind, and body.
We are who the Lord created
We are who we think we are
            We are what we do
                We are what we eat
  1. The spirit is addressed by understanding the truth of the healing process. We are made in the image and likeness of our Lord, our Creator - He said so. Sickness and disease are not conditions that are normal to us, they are foreign to us - we must ask our Lord to lift the sickness and disease from us and to restore us to Him and His perfect will.

  2. The mind is asked to focus on the healing attitudes and the "positive mental attitude that is needed to start, work on, and maintain the healing; part of this is very straight forward, it's very logical. For example, "If I am what I eat, then if I change what I eat I will be a different me."

  3. The body is worked on through chiropractic adjustments, deep lymphatic massage, foods to be ingested, baths, cleansing teas, and exercise.

<<Back to Navigation Panel>>

4. The Researchers and their "Models"

As was stated earlier, in the 1960's and 70's, American school children were taught that "You are what you eat" and that there were four basic food groups - proteins, carbohydrates, vegetables and fruits, and dairy products. The first statement is painfully and chemically true, the last statement is false. What came out of this teaching was an awareness of nutrition and personal responsibility for our own health - it was radical. Let's examine this nutrition / responsibility a little closer, the basis and the process.

Basis / Process - The Biological / Physiological Model for Heiwa-Ryu's Approach -
The biological model upon which Heiwa-Ryu's work is based upon comes from the works of the (Chinese) Yellow Emperor, Hippocrates, Plato and the moderns of Gerson, Schwitzer, Jarvis, Crook, Airiola, and Cayce.

A.   From a body function (Wholistic) perspective, the primary work to focus on is the clinical work and patient responses as found in Dr. Max Gerson's book, A Cancer Therapy - Results from Fifty Cases and The Cure of Advanced Cancer by Diet Therapy, 5th Edition - Fifteenth Printing.

Basically, Dr. Gerson set out a hypothesis that the body can heal itself from anything if it was given the proper foods and the waste avenues kept cleared. Dr. Gerson was able to demonstrate the "remission" of cancer in well over five hundred patients - his work is continued today by his daughter.

The Gerson story - In approximately the 1920's, Max Gerson, M.D. treated tuberculosis patients successfully with a diet regimen which was revolutionary and extremely effective. In the 1930's, Dr. Gerson began to treat terminally ill cancer patients, who had been already treated by combinations of surgery, chemo-therapy, and radiation. The recovery rate for these patients was again phenomenal considering that conventional medicine had given up on them; various forms of cancer "disappeared" - went into remission, pick your word.

In 1946, Dr. Gerson was invited to testify before the "Cancer Research Hearings before a Subcommittee of the Committee on Foreign Relations, United States Senate, Seventy-ninth Congress, Second Session...July 1,2, and 3, 1946". Dr. Gerson provided a cross section (fifty cases) complete with pictures and/or "x rays" of those patients treated to date. We find it truly tragic that Americans that have been stricken with cancer since 1946 have never heard of Dr. Gerson and his cancer therapy. Why was his work never brought to the attention of those dying of cancer; could family and friends struck by cancer have been healed since that time?

In the course of his book - "A Cancer Therapy - Results of Fifty Cases", Appendix I, Charlotte Gerson Straus explains portions of her father's work. "In the course of the book, Dr. Gerson explains the '...underlying ideas and proves his theories by the results which he obtained. However, the title seems to restrict his therapy since people might think that it was for cancer only. The best treatment of Cancer is not to contract it.'" Read on.

"The reason Dr. Gerson chose to present his therapy to the medical profession and to the public as a treatment for cancer specifically was because cancer, of all chronic conditions, presents the most complete degeneration, poisoning, and destruction of the human body. The aim of his therapy is to restore the body's healing mechanism, the functions of all its organs, and the future maintenance of health."

"Since this could be achieved in the most severe, terminal cancer cases as presented here, it follows that the same therapy could achieve restoration and healing in other less destructive chronic conditions. 'In all textbooks, we find that single biological processes have been studied and overestimated statements made about them. The symptoms of the disease have become the main problem for research, clinical work, and therapy. Medical science has eliminated the totality of the natural biological rules in the human body, mostly by dividing research and practice into many specialties...It has forgotten that every part is still only a piece of the entire body' (Cancer Therapy, page 13)'" The problem of specialization is one of how can a dermatologist treat psoriasis when it falls more into the scope of the gastro-internist?

"'...It (Medical specialization) was (has) forgotten that every part is still only a piece of the entire body.'" According to Dr. Gerson's observations, "The food is taken into the body through the digestive canal but sometimes the digestive system lacks the ability to break it up from one intermediary substance into the next. These normal intermediary substances remain in the bloodstream and cause abnormal substances to be formed if they are not digested to their end product and fully eliminated. Through accumulation and backing up, these abnormal substances finally exert a harmful influence on the organism. Individual factors, special weakness of a set of tissues previously damaged (or a congenital or birth condition - JD), will determine which tissues will finally react or which organs will be affected unfavorably (remember that the skin is an organ - JD). For example, we can see that disturbances of the fat metabolism may lead to psoriasis if only a certain feature of the fat metabolism is abnormal; but when the fat metabolism is disturbed as a result of a general decrease in the oxidizing power, as happens in arteriosclerosis, then the tissue of the arteries will show the damage.'

'Thus, similar disturbances can cause different degenerative diseases. According to Gerson's many years of experience, when the liver and all essential organs function fully, whether originally or when restored after disease, the body can eliminate all chronic disease and maintain health... Surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy do not restore the full, normal function of the entire system in cancer patients but tend to further damage the liver and other essential organs...'"

"'According to Dr. Gerson's research, the beginning of all chronic disease is the loss of potassium (K) from the cells and invasion of Sodium (NA) into the cells - and with it water. This causes edema and the resulting malfunctions - loss of electrical potentials in the cells, improper enzyme formation, reduced cell oxidation, etc. The building of almost all enzymes requires K as a catalyst...and is inhibited by sodium (NA) ...The extent of these malfunctions then determines how and to what extent the system is affected and where the symptoms will occur. In order to initiate healing then, it is essential to remove excess Na from the cells, re-introduce large
amounts of K, and detoxify the system of accumulated intermediary substances and other toxins. This is best accomplished by large amounts of K from fresh fruit and juices, detoxification through the kidneys and by enemas, and reactivation of the liver by special liver therapy. If this were only a theoretical assumption, it would not be worth mentioning. However, in Dr. Gerson's many years of experience with all types of chronic disease, this process worked in practice. Degenerative diseases could be reversed, eliminated, and the body healed."

"In the process of restoring the body's functions, its own healing activity will take over in eliminating the specific symptoms. The body will activate enzymes to carry off arthritic swellings... It will reactivate its immune responses to attack tuberculosis or other chronic infections and inflammations.... In certain patients some weaknesses in the system remain."

"They have to be recognized and certain types of foods have to be permanently prohibited.... the body will heal itself when given the right substances and help in detoxification."

"Local or symptomatic treatment does not heal. Excising a tumor or irradiating it does not heal cancer. Nor does aspirin heal arthritis, nor insulin diabetes."

"This inability to heal is caused by various malfunctions including loss of normal mineral balances, poisoning of essential organs due to toxicity, and incomplete digestion and elimination. In order to initiate healing, the first and constant care of the physician is to detoxify the body, especially the liver-bile system..."

"Initial evidence of the healing process brought about by the Gerson therapy takes various forms. For instance, edemas go down with astonishing rapidity; skin afflictions recede and heal quickly..."

"In the tremendously extensive area of skin diseases, the salt-less therapy is extremely valuable - i.e., in acne, eczema, urticaria, prurigo, pemphigus, etc., as already stressed by Luithlen. However, the use of the Gerson therapy in lupus vulgaris and psoriasis is a first and is extremely effective, even in severe cases with already partial sclerodermy. It is particularly interesting to note the scar-dissolving effect of the treatment in old scars and adhesions as well as in cases of Keloid acne."

"...It is important to note that with the 'strictest cancer diet', other chronic disease respond more rapidly than with the less intensive treatment. It is also self-defeating to become too lax in the application of the treatment, with the rationalization that 'a little bit of this or that won't hurt.' This is not correct. 'A little bit' interferes with absorption and detoxification. 'A little bit more' will erase all benefits..."

Review - What Dr. Gerson has pointed out is that all degenerative diseases are able to be treated and that they will respond. Points:

B. One particular modern practitioner of the healing arts is Robert Gray, a nutritionist and Director of the Food for Health Institute. Mr. Gray points out in his book "The Colon Health Handbook" the important relationship between the digestive system and the lymph system. He further stresses the importance of clearing and cleaning the colon so that both the liver and the lymph system can expel toxins - the booklet is well written, logical, and a "must read" for understanding how diet on the one hand can clog and poison the body and yet on the other hand cleanse and clear the body just through daily food choices.

Mr. Gray states, "...As we shall see, there are many mucoid-inducing influences to which you, and virtually every other member of modern society have been subjected all of your lives. Your colon is, therefore, packed with a lifetime's accumulation of old, hardened feces. ....this accumulation of stagnant feces within your body acts against good health in several significant ways.... In order to become healthy, you must complete the removal of old mucoid matter from your colon."

"...Autointoxification is the process whereby the body literally poisons itself by maintaining a cesspool of decaying matter in the colon...The toxins released by the decay process get into the bloodstream and travel to all parts of the body. Every cell in the body gets affected, and many forms of sickness can result. Because it weakens the entire system, Autointoxification can be a causative factor for nearly any disease.... The cause of autointoxification is putrefaction within the intestinal tract. Putrefaction is a process of decay in which foul odors and toxic substances are generated."

"...It is advisable, however, that you periodically cleanse your colon so as to keep the accumulation of toxic material at a low level." The author points out the connection of the lymph system to the colon and how mucoid material is transported by the lymph to the colon and discharged. "...It is the author's belief that the colon is the principal organ through which mucoid matter from the lymph is eliminated..... The recently deceased Loren Berry, who was perhaps the greatest manipulative healers of our time ... taught a technique called lymph drain massage, which he credits to have originated from ancient Chinese medicine. Lymph drain massage is to be performed whenever there is an acute sickness."

"... the colon serves to detoxify the lymph. I find that an unobstructed colon will absorb the mucoid material in the lymph through its walls and its interior. As the walls of the colon become more obstructed with linings of fecal deposits, however, its ability to detoxify the lymph decreases and the accumulation of mucoid matter begins to back up into the lymphatic system, and congestion of the lymphatic system can result."

"A toxic lymph is usually present during an acute sickness.... If the colon cannot perform the necessary rate of purification of the lymph, then the body uses the liver to do the work instead." But what happens if the liver is already overloaded with blood purification? - JD ".. It is interesting to note that most grasses are lymph purifiers, and this explains why animals eat grass when sick."

"...Now we can see how problems can originate when the colon becomes clogged. When this happens, waste material gets backed up into the lymphatic system. As this process continues, waste material backs up into the body tissues and disease can result. This process can affect any body part because the lymphatic system serves all body cells."

Review - Could it be that as the level of "sustained toxins" increases over time and the purifying / sweeping processes of the liver and lymph system become more overloaded, some bodies attempt to use the skin to vent and throw off the toxins? Could it be that in some cases the overload triggers / causes accelerated skin cell growth or conditions that are labeled as Psoriasis and Eczema? Could other chronic disorders actually be gastro-internal upsets that are easily treated through diet and proper nutrition?

As stated earlier, since the body is constantly processing food and constantly cleaning / clearing itself, the condition of P/E did not occur overnight. We at Heiwa-Ryu believe that P/E appears to be the way that certain individual body's cope with a constant toxic overload condition; that is by creating more skin cells rapidly in order to trap / vent / encapsulate / shed the toxin overload.

Robert Gray, The Colon Health Handbook, twelfth revised edition, pages 12 through 43. Mr. Gray believes that:

5. Heiwa-Ryu's Approach - Amplified

Heiwa-Ryu is here to help those suffering with any chronic health disorder:

1. ATTITUDINAL HEALING - This process shifts the focus from the "dis-ease" and the symptoms over to the cause and the healing process from within. There are a number of books written on "attitudinal healing" and acceptance; some are good some are great. You have heard the comment, "Oh, they just need an attitude adjustment." Sometimes we laughed when we heard it because it was usually referring to a negative comment or negative actions on the part of the one needing the adjustment.

While there is truth in the comment, all of us need to look at ourselves and not only like what we see but love the person that we see; we need to accept and love ourselves.

We need to recognize our weaknesses and act on our strengths. We need to shift our focus off of our shortcomings and onto our spiritual and physical gifts. After this first shift, we then need to look at how we can help others in this sea of life; taking the Maslow-Erickson pyramid and making the self-actualization into a sharing and a giving to others.

We believe that this shift is the major step not only in recovering from any disease but in staying well and living life with the ultimate "gusto" - the "gusto" and joy of giving until it feels good inside.

A number of things are wrapped into an "Attitudinal Healing". There is self respect and self esteem - not from an ego-centric perspective but from a satisfied acceptance of who we are at this point in our lives. As acceptance of ourselves builds, a healing of spirit, mind, and body takes place. From this a love that will / must build and pour out to others for their sake and their lifting; for our sake and our satisfied fulfillment - this isn't philosophy, it's a fact. Check it out, Albert Schwitzer, Mother Teresa, the Dali Lama, and you - why not go for the gusto - you really will feel and be better and better.

2. CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS - Adjustments specifically improve circulation and nerve flow; they generally improve structural balance and general well being. Chiropractic adjustments support colon and lymph functions.

After reviewing the works of Dr. Max Gerson, Mr. Robert Gray, and Dr. John Pagano, it is quite logical to use chiropractic adjustments to assist in the clearing / cleaning operations that must be involved in the healing of all disease and in particular psoriasis / eczema.

The adjustments are focused on those spinal areas which support the circulatory system, the liver, the colon, and the lymph system. It is crucial to align the spinal column so that the nerves connecting to these areas are free from constraints, pressure, or other restricting conditions.

3. MASSAGE - The deep lymphatic massage promotes lymphatic circulation and the release of toxins both to the bloodstream and to the colon.

The massage therapist will focus on moving and pumping the lymph to the cisterna chyli - this is the central lymphatic pool located in the abdomen, it is the origin of the thoracic duct which travel up the body and connects with the bloodstream slightly below and to the left of the base of the neck.

As Mr. Robert Gray has pointed out in his book, The Colon Health Handbook, pages 22 and 23, the lymph can and does undergo a retrograde flow called chylous reflux wherein lymph flows from the cisterna chyli back into the colon..."...the colon serves to detoxify the lymph."

During the healing process, the goal of the massage therapist is to move lymph to the cisterna chyli so that it can be separated - fluids to the bloodstream for processing by the liver which in turn will dump to the colon - "mucused" lymph materials undergo chylous reflux and are moved to the colon for elimination. As you can see, the colon is crucial to the detoxification process; therefore, concurrent with the massage therapy is a colon clearing / cleaning strategy - this is further developed under "point 4".

4. DIET EDUCATION - FOODS CONSUMED and HERBAL TEAS - At this point or station, the patient is educated as to what foods are helpful in moving the body's pH to the proper alkalinity and what foods will promote colon clearing / cleansing. The patient is introduced to a three month colon cleansing program that is concurrent with the diet plans that prepare the body to detoxify and allow it to heal itself from the effects of psoriasis / eczema P/E.

High Potassium intake, high alkaline diet, low acid fiber, fresh fruit, and vegetables - no caffeine - limited alcohol - this is the basic foundation of the diet regimen.

Certain herbal teas are recommended which have proven to be quite effective in soothing the digestive tract and in facilitating the clearing of chronic sickness; obviously, these teas must be taken as part of the diet regimen, there is no "silver bullet" in the healing process, the whole body and all of the "points" are viewed on a "wholistic" basis. The synergy of all of the points far exceeds the effects of the points if approached separately.

A note on the intestinal clearing / cleaning - As has been stated previously, it is imperative that the entire digestive tract become cleared / cleansed, especially the colon. Colonic irrigations by themselves will clean the colon but will rarely clear the colon even after repeated procedures. Enemas in conjunction with the herbal clearing / cleaning of the colon as discussed in Mr. Robert Gray's handbook will both clear and clean the colon over a period of two to three months - remember, you and I have been loading up the colon with junk since we were first weaned off of our mother's milk and the ensuing processed meats and foods for years.

Drinking a minimum of four 8 Ounce glasses (two pints - one quart) of distilled or maybe spring water - no chlorine and no flourides please - is the most subtle step toward healing and good health. Water is the basic lubricant and chemical media required by the body. Cell metabolism is impaired by just minor shortages of water, as the water in the body decreases, toxic reactions increase since the normal flushing of wastes and dead cells out of the body is slowing down.

Enemas are encouraged since they accomplish two major tasks. The first is the removal of processed food near the rectum. The second andmore powerful task is that of creating a Colonic reflex that seems to spark the entire body into a healing mode. Dr. Gerson found that coffee enemas were especially effective with cancer patients since there was not only the Colonic reflex for healing but also a dilation of the bile ducts to help the liver pass more of the necrotic material as the body destroyed cancer cells.

Remember, a cleared / cleaned colon allows both the liver and lymph system to remove toxins and poisons from the body through proper bowel function. With the liver able to function properly, the kidneys will cease to be overloaded and then they too can function properly; the tattle-tale uric acid crystal in the feet will disappear. Please re-read Dr. Max Gerson's comments as found in this section.

5. BATHS, EXTERNAL APPLICATIONS - For certain disorders, baths and salves are helpful. The hot tub treatment is an excellent way to help the body drive out infection.

6. EXERCISE - 30 MINUTES - We all need to exercise on a daily basis - twice a day is preferable. There are books upon books written about exercise, oxygen uptake, circulatory (Blood and lymph) system enhancements, etc., etc. that are aided and abetted by daily exercise. Suffice to say that the development and/or participation in a regular exercise program assists all body parts and body functions to receive increased blood supplies which in turn augments the detoxification process. Use a daily walk as a good start - what's that? You say you can't afford the time? Try a hospital visit for a coronary. Invest in your future life and health.

A HealthRider is not a bad investment ($150 to $350) for the days that you can't walk due to rain, etc.

2. FIRST AID

A. TRAUMA

  1. Bone Bruises - Apply the "Dog Skin Poultice" immediately. Remove the poultice from the plastic bag, warm with hand heat and "chi". Apply to the trauma and tape on. Poultice will stick for about 2 to 3 days - when it no longer sticks, the bruise is healed. Follow-up with the Wan Hua (Man Fa) oil. If no poultice is available, follow the "Bruises" treatment.

  2. Bruises - Gently rub in 1/2 teaspoon of Wan Hua (Man Fa) oil immediately, then follow with 1/2 teaspoon of Tsing Xsing (Zing Chsing) to disperse the "oily " feeling.

  3. Cuts / Small cuts / scrapes - apply a good grade of "Tea Tree Oil" it is better than penicillin - used by the Australian troops during W.W.II.

  4. Cuts / Large cuts or arterial bleeding - seek Western Trauma Center treatment - immediately apply pressure to the cut artery - go to emergency ward at local hospital - you may require micro-surgery and/or stitches.

2. Treatment

    2.1 Get plenty of rest
2.2 Drink plenty of water - 8 to 10 (8 oz.) glasses per day make sure that it is bottled water or spring water.
2.3 Mix one packet of "E-mer'gen-C" by Alacer Corporation with each glass of water.
    2.4 Take 2 - Echinacea capsules (500 Mg) 5 times the 1st day and 3 times a day thereafter.
    2.5 Take 2 - Ester C - Vitamin C (1000 Mg) time release 5 times the 1st day and 3 times a day thereafter.

2.7 Take 4 "Zong Gan Ling" by Dr. Shen from Shen's Herbal Products 5 times the 1st day and 3 times a day thereafter.
2.8 Take about 1 teaspoonful of "honeycomb" and chew on it like you would chewing gum - then spit it out.
    2.9 Take 2 - Zinc Picolinate capsules 3 times a day.

Why / What Happens?

1.1 through 1.2 (2.1 - 2.2) tend to deal with stress and fatigue. The water is needed to carry the "herbal warriors" to the scene of the invasion.

1.3 (2.3) Takes the missing potassium and places it in the body with the water - See Dr. Gerson's comments on this earlier on this page.

1.4 (2.4) The Echinacea - is a powerful antibiotic and blood purifier and blood strengthener. It will fight off infection and viruses as it builds up the auto-immune system.

1.5 (2.5) Vitamin C - many books written on the properties of "C" and its ability to promote cell repair and ward off infection.

1.6 (2.6) Ginkyolic - is a combination of time proven herbs (No chicken feet or Gecko lizard gizzards allowed). The Ginkgo has been used by the English for over 600 years; Soke's Grand-mother and Grand-aunt both used it as an herbal extract for treatment of stress and fatigue and brain cleansing. The Kyolic component is deodorized Garlic; this preparation has been laboratory and clinically proven to kill bacteria and viruses. It is a tremendous boost to the auto-immune system. Some Ginseng has been folded in so that the anti-fatigue and stress relief are even more effective.

1.7 (2.7) The two products from Shen's Herbal Products, Box 8343, Berkeley, CA 94707 (510) 527-HERB are the Yin Chiao and the Zong Gan Ling. Both of these products worked for Soke; they tout a 500 year healing record; give them a try.

2.8 The honeycomb - this item appears to have been used for over 5,000 years for the relief of severe hay fever, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Both Chinese and English medical practitioners have used it for centuries. The wax when chewed like a sweet gum, appears to line all of the air passages. It works up into all of the sinuses for relief and to also work down into the alveoli - the smallest of the lung chambers. No one is certain as to how it works or even why it works, but it certainly works well to everyone's amazement. Dr. Jarvis MD recommends it.

2.9 Zinc Picolinate - sometimes spelled differently, seems to "zap" the cold / bronchitis bugs quickly.

1.8 - Also for coughing and bronchitis symptoms, use the old remedy of:

Start with 1 and 1/2 cup of spring water in a small pot over a medium heat; then mix in:

1/2 Teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper
1     Teaspoon of ginger
1     Teaspoon of Garlic (8 capsules of Kyolic)
3     Tablespoons of Lemon juice (you can use Cider Vinegar instead)
3     Tablespoons of Dark Honey
3     Tablespoons of Brandy - still works without the Brandy!

This seems to be the best remedy to date - seems to stop the cough and break up the mucous. You will find a similar recipe on page 58 of Healthy Healing by Linda Rector-Page, see bibliography.

For Night Time cough relief, use the preceding (1.8) recipe and then carefully rub in to the chest about a teaspoon of the Chinese herbs known as:
  1. Wood Lock, (This is the best for congestion) or
  2. Tsing Xsing, or
  3. Wan Hua oil.
We know, they smell different - but they work and you don't have to use them in the morning as a cologne. Be careful with "a." and "b." while they are not as powerful as "c." they can cause a burning sensation in the eyes or other sensitive body parts upon casual contact.

While this may appear to be a lot of "pills and procedures", they seem to be very effective in restoring the body's ability to fight off the sickness and restore the body to a refreshed state.
